Repair the Gates! The King of Glory is Coming!
Jerusalem, the Holy City of God, was in great distress and reproach. The wall was broken down, and the gates had been burned with fire. Jerusalem had become a city without walls. “Whoever has no rjle over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls” Proverbs 25:28. The glory that the city once knew was gone and Nehemiah wept.
According to Deuteronomy twenty-eight, captivity would only come to the children of Israel if they did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, to observe carefully all the commandments and statutes that He gave through Moses. True Covenant Love is never lawless. Sadly, they cast off the love of God and fell prey to the hatred of the enemy, but there was hope! Their hope was dependent upon three action words – “return, keep, and do.” The same action words remain true for us today.
The gates, their names, and the names of the people chosen to repair each gate and the wall surrounding the city are significant. Through them, the process and the proof of discipleship into Christ, the Covenant Love of God, is revealed.
